O registro formal — Prezado senhor

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 56 of 60 · taught in Lição 36 · level B2. Emails, o senhor, nominalisation, and the three-way register dial.

What this is about

Written Brazilian Portuguese is a different suit of clothes, not a different language. A formal e-mail to a landlord, a bank or a public office follows a fixed shape, cuts nothing short, hides the person behind the action, and never gives an order — it requests, in the conditional, with a cushion in front. Learn the five slots and the five polite formulas and you can write any professional message in Brazil.

The e-mail skeleton — five slots, always the same

Prezado Senhor Almeida, · Prezados, · Caro João, saudação — Prezado(a) is the safe default
Venho por meio desta comunicar um problema no imóvel. abertura — why you are writing
Seguem em anexo as fotos do local.assunto + evidence
Fico à disposição para esclarecimentos e aguardo retorno. fecho
Atenciosamente, · Cordialmente,despedida
How dressed is each sign-off? Atenciosamente = the black suit, always correct. Cordialmente = a shade warmer, for a regular contact. Att. = colleagues only. Abraços only after the wall has actually been fixed.

What the grammar does differently

Writing spells everything out — tá → está, pra → para, tô → estou, and né? disappears entirely. Then three bigger moves.

O senhor poderia agendar a visita? o senhor / a senhora replaces você
Solicito a realização de um orçamento.nominalisation: the verb becomes a noun
Solicita-se a confirmação do recebimento. se impessoal — no one is named
O parecer foi encaminhado à diretoria.passive — the agent vanishes
Why the agent disappears: Você não enviou o documento accuses a person. O documento não foi enviado states a fact. The passive is how you complain without starting a war.

The politeness engine — five phrases that do all the work

Gostaria de solicitar uma reunião de alinhamento. gostaria de = the polite want
Seria possível remarcar a visita?seria possível = the soft ask
Peço a gentileza de confirmar o recebimento até sexta. the velvet order — and the deadline is real
Agradeço desde já a atenção.thanks before the yes
Lamento informar que a vaga já foi preenchida.the bad-news opener

The dial — one message, three registers

Same news: there is damp on your wall. Nothing changes but the clothes.

Cara, tá tudo alagado aqui kkk — minha parede virou piscina! friend, WhatsApp
Oi Ana, tudo bem? Desculpa incomodar — deu uma infiltração no meu apartamento. colleague, the warm middle
Prezado Senhor Almeida, venho por meio desta comunicar uma infiltração na parede da sala.landlord / official
Solicito a gentileza de agendar uma visita técnica. Fico à disposição.the ask, formally
Never in a formal e-mail: kkk · emojis · gíria (deu ruim, mano, top) · diminutives (uma perguntinha) · and above all never open with Oi! One "Oi!" to a landlord costs more authority than three spelling mistakes.

Exceptions & details

1 · Seguem, not segue. The photos are what follow, so the verb agrees with them: Seguem em anexo as fotos, but Segue em anexo o contrato.
2 · Pronoun placement in writing: default ênclise with a hyphen — Informo-lhe que o prazo venceu. A magnet word (não, que, nunca, sempre, quem) pulls it forward: Não me informaram sobre a mudança. Never open a written sentence with Lhe informo…
3 · The escape hatch that always works: if the pronoun makes you sweat, rewrite without it — Informo que o prazo venceu · Solicito o envio do orçamento. Formal Portuguese prefers a noun anyway.
4 · The four-item safety check before sending: hunt for tá/pra, for kkk or an emoji, for a diminutive, and for an exclamation mark. Delete all four and what remains is already formal.
5 · Politeness is not softness. Peço a gentileza de responder até sexta-feira sounds gentle and is not — Brazilians hear the date perfectly well.
