Ser vs Estar — the two "to be"s

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 1 of 60 · taught in Lição 1 · level A1. Identity vs state: the most important distinction in Portuguese.

What this is about

English has one verb "to be". Portuguese splits it into two, and the split carries real meaning: SER tells us what something IS — its identity, essence, definition. ESTAR tells us how or where something is RIGHT NOW — a state, a mood, a location, a condition that can change. Brazilians hear the difference instantly: ela é bonita means she IS a beautiful woman; ela está bonita means she looks great today. Master this one distinction and half of A1 falls into place.

Memory hook: SER = eSsence · eSTAR = STATe. Ask "will this still be true next month?" Yes → ser. Maybe not → estar.

The flip test — same adjective, two meanings

Ela está feliz. she is happy right now (mood)
O café é bom.coffee (in general / this brand) is good
O café está bom.THIS cup tastes good

Exceptions & details

1 · Location of EVENTS uses ser: A festa é na casa da Ana — the party "is" there by definition (it happens there). People and things use estar: Ana está na festa.
2 · Death is estar: Ele está morto — grammar treats it as a state.
3 · Spoken shortcuts: estou → tô, está → tá: Tô bem! Tá bom! Recognize them; write the full forms.
