What this is about
Regência is the preposition a verb drags along with it. You already know gostar de and precisar de; the trouble starts when English pulls you somewhere else — "depend on", "complain about", "married to". Portuguese has its own map, and it is smaller than it looks: four families cover almost everything. The habit to build is simple — never learn a verb without its preposition.
The DE family — need, miss, quit, complain
The biggest family: gostar de · precisar de · lembrar de · esquecer de · depender de · desistir de · duvidar de · reclamar de · cuidar de · participar de. The contractions do half the work: de + o = do · de + a = da · de + ele = dele.
| Eu dependo de você para terminar isso. | never dependo em |
| Ela reclamou do prazo apertado. | de + o = do |
| Eu me esqueci de avisar a equipe. | esquecer-se de + infinitive |
| A gente está participando do projeto esse ano. | participar de, not em |
The EM family — the inner life
acreditar em · confiar em · pensar em · insistir em · entrar em · mexer em. Contractions again: em + o = no · em + a = na · em + ele = nele.
| Confia em mim — eu cuido disso hoje. | never confio de |
| Eu pensei no assunto a noite toda. | em + o = no |
| Ele insistiu em ficar até tarde. | insistir em + infinitive |
| Eu cheguei em São Paulo às oito. | 🇧🇷 chegar em — Portugal says chegar a |
The A / PARA family — and the verb that takes nothing
| Eu liguei para o cliente três vezes. | ligar para (to phone) |
| Eu avisei você ontem! | ⚠ avisar takes a plain object — no preposition |
| Eu pedi para ela mandar o arquivo. | pedir para + person |
| Todo mundo tem que obedecer ao prazo. | obedecer a · responder a · assistir a |
| Ela me ensinou a dizer não. | ensinar alguém a |
The COM family — relationships
| Eu concordo com você totalmente. | concordar com |
| Você pode contar com o meu apoio. | contar com = to rely on |
| Ela casou com um colega do trabalho. | Portuguese marries WITH — never de |
| Você parece muito com a sua mãe. | parecer com = to resemble |
| Não se preocupa com isso · sonhar com · se importar com | the rest of the family |
Exceptions & details
1 · The pairs where the preposition IS the meaning. Conto com você (I rely on you) ≠ Conto para você (I tell you). Penso em você (I think about you) ≠ O que você pensa dele? (your opinion of him). Assisti ao jogo (watched) ≠ A enfermeira assistiu o paciente (assisted).
2 · The lembrar / esquecer rule in one line: no reflexive pronoun → no preposition (lembrei o nome, esqueci a chave); reflexive pronoun → de (me lembrei do nome, me esqueci da chave). Spoken Brazil overwhelmingly prefers the second.
3 · Brazil vs Portugal, decision one: say cheguei em São Paulo. Cheguei a casa sounds like reading an old textbook aloud.
4 · Brazil vs Portugal, decision two: books demand assistir ao filme; real speech says assisti o filme at every level of education. Speak the second, write the first.
5 · Diagnose your own slips: nearly every regência mistake is English leaking through. When you hesitate, ask what English would do — and then deliberately do something else.
