The rule in one line
TUDO = "everything" — stands ALONE, never changes.
TODO/TODA/TODOS/TODAS = "every / all / whole" — always attached to a NOUN, and agrees with it.
If there's a noun after it → todo. If it stands alone → tudo. Comi tudo. vs Comi todo o bolo.
TUDO — everything
| Tudo bem? | How's it going? (lit. everything well?) |
| Obrigado por tudo. | Thanks for everything. |
| Tudo pronto! · Isso é tudo. | All set! · That's all. |
TODO — every / all / whole
| todo dia · toda semana | every day · every week |
| o dia todo · a noite toda | the WHOLE day · all night long |
| todos os dias · todas as lojas | every day (= todo dia) · all the shops |
| todo mundo | everyone (super common!) |
Position changes meaning: todo dia = EVERY day, but o dia todo = the WHOLE day. Trabalho todo dia vs Trabalhei o dia todo.
Common mistakes
| ❌ Todo bem? | ✅ Tudo bem? — no noun, so tudo |
| ❌ Comi tudo o bolo | ✅ Comi o bolo todo / todo o bolo |
| ❌ tudo mundo | ✅ todo mundo — mundo is a noun! |
