Question words

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 10 of 60 · taught in Lição 3 · level A1. onde, quando, como, por quê, quanto, o que, quem.

What this is about

The interrogation kit — the words that open every question. Portuguese questions are refreshingly easy: no word-order gymnastics, no "do/does". Take a statement, put a question word in front (or just raise your voice), done.

The kit

o que? what? — O que você quer?
quem?who? — Quem é ela?
onde?where? — Onde você mora?
quando?when? — Quando você trabalha?
como? how? — Como você está?
por quê? / por que…?why? — Por que você estuda português?
quanto? / quanta? / quantos? / quantas?how much / how many? — agrees with the noun!
qual? / quais?which? — Qual você quer?

How questions are built

Você fala inglês? yes/no question = statement + rising voice. That's it.
Onde você mora? question word + normal sentence order
Quanto custa? how much is it? — your shopping key
Quantas horas você trabalha?quantas agrees with horas (fem. pl.)
The é que decoration: Brazilians love padding questions with é que: Onde é que você mora? It adds zero meaning — pure rhythm. Recognize it everywhere; use it when you want to sound extra natural.

Exceptions & details

1 · por que vs por quê: at the END of a sentence it grows a hat: Você estuda por quê? Mid-sentence: por que. (And "because" = porque, one word — Lição 6.)
2 · o que vs qual: "what is your name?" uses qual: Qual é o seu nome? — o que asks for definitions (O que é isso? = what IS that?).
3 · cadê: spoken Brazil's "where's…?": Cadê meu celular? — pure colloquial gold.
