Mais-que-perfeito & reported speech

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 38 of 60 · taught in Lição 28 · level B1. tinha falado (past before past) + ele disse que… (quoting people).

What this is about

Two tools that make you a storyteller instead of a reporter. The mais-que-perfeito (tinha + participle) is the past before the past — "when I arrived, the party had already ended". Reported speech is quoting people without quotation marks — "he said he was tired" — and it comes with a predictable tense shift. Add the suspense connectors (de repente, acontece que, no final das contas) and you can tell a novela-worthy story.

tinha + participle — the past before the past

tinha · tinha · tínhamos · tinham + falado / comido / saído imperfeito of ter + participle
Quando cheguei, a festa já tinha acabado. the classic: já + tinha
Ela tinha visto tudo. · Eu tinha feito a reserva. rebel participles again
tenho feito · tinha feito · terei feito · teria feitoonly ter changes — the participle is fixed
The storyteller's three layers: imperfeito = the scene (era noite, estava chovendo), pretérito = the events (cheguei, vi, gritei), tinha + participle = the step before (ela já tinha saído).

Reported speech — the shift

"Estou cansado" → Ele disse que estava cansado. present → imperfeito
"Vou viajar" → Ela falou que ia viajar. vou → ia (or viajaria)
"Vi tudo" → Ela me contou que tinha visto tudo. past → tinha + participle
"Você pode ajudar?" → Ele perguntou se eu podia ajudar. yes/no questions → se
hoje → naquele dia · amanhã → no dia seguinte · ontem → no dia anterior · aqui → látime & place words shift too

The suspense connectors

De repente… · Sem mais nem menos… the twist
Acontece que… · Mal sabia eu que… · A essa altura…the reveal / the timeline
No final das contas… · Para encurtar a história… · Aliás…wrapping up / aside
Não acredito! · Jura?! · Conta! Conta! the listener's job

Exceptions & details

1 · Written pluperfect: books use a one-word form — saíra, fizera, dissera (eles-past minus -ram + -ra) — meaning tinha saído. Recognise, don't produce.
2 · Spoken Brazil often skips the shift when the fact is still true: Ela disse que mora em Recife (she still does). The shift is obligatory when the fact belongs to the past.
3 · falar que / dizer que / contar que all introduce reported speech; perguntar se introduces yes/no questions; perguntar onde/quando/por que keeps the question word.
4 · Ele disse que viria (conditional) is the careful version of disse que ia vir.
