A dissertação — em primeiro lugar

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 58 of 60 · taught in Lição 38 · level B2. The four-part argument skeleton and its formal connector inventory.

What this is about

A Brazilian argumentative text — the dissertação of school, of the ENEM, of any serious written opinion — has a shape as fixed as a sonnet. Four paragraphs, each with one job. Once you know the skeleton you never stare at a blank page again: the only question left is what to put in each slot. This chapter gives you the skeleton, the formal connector inventory that holds it together, the trick of making the author disappear, and the dial that stops you overclaiming.

The skeleton — four moves, always the same

1 · Introdução — contextualização + tese state the problem, then promise your claim
2 · Desenvolvimento 1 — argumento + repertórioone idea plus one piece of evidence
3 · Desenvolvimento 2 — contra-argumento + refutaçãoname the other side, then answer it
4 · Conclusão — retomada da tese + proposta de intervenção close the circle, then propose action
The move nobody skips: the tese at the end of paragraph one. Without it the reader does not know what you are defending and everything after reads as wandering. One sentence — Diante disso, é preciso… — and the text has a spine.

The connector kit — sorted by job

Lição 30 gave you the spoken connectors (no entanto, ou seja, já que, mesmo assim). They still work. Written Portuguese has a heavier set, and using it is half of what makes a text sound educated.

Atualmente… · É inegável que… · Diante disso… opening & thesis
Ademais… · Além do mais… · Outrossim… adding — Outrossim is extremely formal
Entretanto… · Todavia… · Em contrapartida… the written replacements for mas
Uma vez que… · Visto que… · Por conseguinte…cause → result
Portanto… · Dessa forma… · Em suma… closing the text
Register warning: Ademais and especially Outrossim are written-only — say Outrossim at a churrasco and people will laugh for a week. Entretanto and Todavia are the safe workhorses. And never open two paragraphs with the same connector: the grader counts.

Impersonality — making the author disappear

You argue in the third person. The opinion stays; the "I" goes.

The paradox: removing "I" makes the opinion stronger. Eu acho que a mídia influencia o debate invites "well, I think otherwise". Constata-se que a mídia influencia o debate invites the reader to check the evidence — which is where you want the conversation.

Hedging — choosing the volume

100% — use rarely
Provavelmente, o investimento crescerá nos próximos anos.likely
A desigualdade tende a reduzir o acesso à universidade. the safest notch
❌ Todos sabem que isso resolve tudo.overclaim — it weakens you instantly
Five sentences, all four moves, not a single eu acho.

Exceptions & details

1 · The proposta de intervenção, finger by finger: agente · ação · meio · finalidade · detalhamento. Miss one finger and it reads as a wish, not a proposal.
2 · Never end with a sign-off.
3 · mas is for speaking. On paper: A escola é boa; entretanto, falta investimento.
4 · A friend is not a fonte confiável. Repertório means data, law, history, a named study — not meu amigo falou isso ontem.
5 · The one-minute self-check: search your text for eu, mas and todos sabem. Delete or upgrade all three and the paragraph jumps a level before you have changed a single idea.
6 · It is not only for school. A work e-mail proposing who does what, how and why gets answered; one proposing "we should improve things" does not.
