What this is about
Your first future tense — and honestly, the only one you need for years. English does it too: "I'm GOING TO travel". Portuguese: conjugated ir + any infinitive. No new endings to learn — if you know vou/vai/vamos/vão, you can already talk about tomorrow.
The formula
ir (present) + infinitive = future
| Eu vou viajar amanhã. | I'm going to travel tomorrow |
| Você vai comer agora? | are you going to eat now? |
| Nós vamos estudar à noite. | we're going to study tonight |
| Eles vão trabalhar no sábado. | they're going to work on Saturday |
| Eu não vou trabalhar amanhã! | negation: não before vou |
Vamos! — the bonus meaning
Vamos + verb doubles as "let's": Vamos dançar! (let's dance!), Vamos comer? (shall we eat?). Alone, Vamos! = let's go! You will hear this fifty times a day in Brazil.
Exceptions & details
1 · Never "vou ir": going somewhere is just vou + place: Vou para a praia amanhã.
2 · Time words do the heavy lifting: amanhã, depois, à noite, no domingo — drop one in and the future is unmistakable.
3 · There IS a formal future tense (falarei, comerá — Lição 21) — newspapers use it; conversations almost never. Learn ir + infinitive first; it covers 95% of spoken life.
