Presente do subjuntivo — que eu fale

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 32 of 60 · taught in Lição 22 · level B1. The maybe-mood: wishes, hopes and doubts after que.

What this is about

Every verb form you learned before Lição 22 belongs to the indicative — the mood of facts. The subjuntivo is the mood of everything that is not (yet) a fact: wishes, hopes, doubts, fears, "maybe", "although", "it's important that". English lost most of it ("I suggest he be on time"); Portuguese uses it dozens of times a day. If you say Espero que você vem, every Brazilian understands you — and every one of them hears a foreigner. This chapter fixes that.

The formation — the great vowel swap

falar → eu falo → que eu fale, que ele fale, que nós falemos, que eles falem -AR verbs: a → e
comer → eu como → que eu coma, que nós comamos, que eles comam -ER verbs: e → a
abrir → eu abro → que eu abra, que nós abramos, que eles abram-IR verbs: i → a
ter → eu tenho → que eu tenha · pôr → ponho → ponha · vir → venho → venha start from the EU-form: irregular eu-forms carry over
The recipe: take the eu-form of the present, drop the -o, swap the vowel. Because you start from the eu-form, faço → faça, digo → diga, peço → peça, ouço → ouça come free.

The rebels — verbs with their own subjunctive

ser → seja · estar → esteja · ir → vá · dar → dê the eu-form trick fails: memorise
saber → saiba · querer → queira · haver → haja the other three
chegar → chegue · ficar → fique · começar → comece · dirigir → dirijaspelling only — keep the sound

The triggers — what switches it on

Exceptions & details

1 · Certainty stays indicative: sei que, tenho certeza que, é verdade que, acho que ela vem. Only the negative não acho que venha flips.
2 · Same subject → infinitive: Quero viajar (I want, I travel). The subjunctive needs a change of subject: Quero que VOCÊ viaje.
3 · Talvez before the verb takes the subjunctive (talvez ele venha); after the verb it doesn't (ele vem, talvez).
4 · Spoken shortcut: after impersonal phrases Brazilians love the infinitive: É melhor você ir = É melhor que você vá (see the infinitivo pessoal chapter).
5 · Commands are the subjunctive too: Fale! Não fale! Venha! — the você-imperative from Lição 13 was the subjunctive all along.
