Futuro do subjuntivo — quando eu for

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 37 of 60 · taught in Lição 27 · level B1. The planning tense: quando, se and assim que pointing at the future.

What this is about

The futuro do subjuntivo is the tense Portuguese has and almost no other language keeps: whenever a "when / if / as soon as / whenever" clause points at the future, the verb takes it — quando eu for ao Brasil, se você puder, assim que ela chegar. English uses the plain present here ("when I go"), which is why learners say quando eu vou. For regular verbs it looks like the infinitive; for the eight irregulars it's your last costume of the eles-past.

The formation — the eles-past, third costume

falaram → falar: quando eu falar, ele falar, nós falarmos, eles falarem looks like the infinitive (+ -mos, -em)
tiveram → tiver · fizeram → fizer · puderam → puder · souberam → souber irregulars: eles-past minus -am
foram → for (ser & ir) · estiveram → estiver · vieram → vier · quiseram → quiser the big eight
quando nós formos · quando eles tiverem · se vocês puderemplural endings: -mos / -em
One family, three tenses: from tiveram you get tivesse (if-form), tiver (future subj.) and, in books, tivera (literary pluperfect). Learn the eles-past well and three tenses come free.

The triggers

Quando eu for ao Brasil, vou te visitar. quando (future)
Se você puder, me liga. se (real, future condition)
Assim que eu chegar, te aviso. · Depois que ela terminar… · Enquanto você estiver lá… assim que · depois que · enquanto
Sempre que você quiser! · Faz o que você quiser. · Quem chegar primeiro… sempre que · o que · quem (open future)

Exceptions & details

1 · fosse vs for: se eu fosse rico = daydream (unreal); se eu for rico = a real possibility I'm planning around. Same for pudesse / puder.
2 · Never the future tense after quando/se — quando eu irei is wrong.
3 · Habitual "when" takes the indicative: Quando chove, fico em casa (every time it rains). Only future-pointing "when" takes the -r form.
4 · Fixed phrases natives use weekly: seja o que for (whatever it may be), custe o que custar (whatever it costs), aconteça o que acontecer (come what may), quando você puder (whenever you can).
