What this is about
How to TELL A STORY in Portuguese — the skill this whole level builds toward. Stories run on a three-gear engine: imperfeito paints the scene, estava + gerund keeps an action rolling, and perfeito fires the events. Add five glue words and you can narrate anything that ever happened to you.
The three gears
| scene (imperfeito) | Era uma noite escura. Eu estava em casa. |
| rolling action (estava + -ndo) | Eu estava dormindo… |
| bang! — the event (perfeito) | …quando o telefone tocou! |
The five glue words
| Era uma vez… | once upon a time (imperfeito, always!) |
| de repente | suddenly — announces a perfeito event |
| então | then / so — moves the plot |
| enquanto isso | meanwhile — parallel scenes |
| no final | in the end — No final, tudo terminou bem. |
A complete mini-story — see the gears shift
Era meia-noite e eu estava dormindo. De repente, ouvi um barulho estranho. Fiquei com medo! Levantei devagar e fui até a porta. Então a luz acendeu… era só o gato. No final, voltei para a cama e dormi.
Scene (era, estava dormindo) → events in a chain (ouvi, fiquei, levantei, fui, acendeu, voltei, dormi). That rhythm IS Portuguese storytelling.
Exceptions & details
1 · Two parallel pasts: enquanto + two imperfeitos: Enquanto eu cozinhava, ela estudava.
2 · acontecer is your "what happened?" verb: O que aconteceu? Aconteceu uma coisa estranha!
3 · parecer hedges the scene: Parecia um gato… (it seemed like a cat) — great suspense tool.
