Infinitivo pessoal — para nós fazermos

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 42 of 60 · taught in Lição 32 · level B2. The conjugated infinitive — the grammar only Portuguese has.

What this is about

Portuguese is the only major language whose infinitive can be conjugated: para eu entender, para nós entendermos, para eles entenderem. The infinitivo pessoal lets you give an infinitive its own subject — "for us to understand", "before they sign", "without you knowing" — where English needs a whole clause. Brazilians use it constantly, and it is also the everyday shortcut that replaces many subjunctives: É melhor a gente chegar cedo.

The form — two endings, that's all

eu entender · você/ele entender · nós entendermos · vocês/eles entenderem only nós (-mos) and eles (-em) change
falar / falarmos / falarem · abrir / abrirmos / abrirem · ser / sermos / serem · ter / termos / terem100% regular — even ser and ter
a gente chegar (not chegarmos) a gente = ele-form, as always
Looks familiar? For regular verbs the forms are identical to the future subjunctive (falar, falarmos, falarem). Different job, same shape — the irregulars split them: quando eu for vs para eu ser.

When it fires — preposition + its own subject

Para nós conseguirmos o visto, faltam dois documentos. para
Antes de vocês assinarem, leiam tudo. · Depois de eles chegarem, tudo andou. antes de · depois de
Sem você saber… · Até eles chamarem… · Apesar de sermos estrangeiros…sem · até · apesar de
Ao chegar, pegue uma senha. ao + infinitive = upon …ing

The subjunctive shortcut

É melhor a gente chegar cedo. = É melhor que cheguemos cedo. speech prefers the infinitive
É importante vocês preencherem tudo. = É importante que vocês preencham tudo.impersonal phrases: both OK
Quero que vocês assinem. (NOT quero vocês assinarem)after querer/esperar/pedir + que → subjunctive only
Depois de vocês assinarem… (NOT depois de que assinem)after a preposition → infinitive only

Exceptions & details

1 · para eu, not para mim: the doer of an infinitive is a subject pronoun — para eu fazer, para você ver. Para mim only when nothing follows (isso é para mim). Very common native slip; you can do better.
2 · Same subject → plain infinitive: Saí sem falar (I left without [me] speaking). Add the ending only when the subject is different or needs stressing: Saí sem eles verem.
3 · Written register loves it: Pedimos aos passageiros que… → Pedimos aos passageiros apresentarem…. In notices, forms and emails the personal infinitive is everywhere.
4 · ao + infinitive = quando + verb: Ao entrar, ele viu tudo = quando entrou.
