Gíria & expressões — tá ligado?

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 57 of 60 · taught in Lição 37 · level B2. The safe slang core, the idiom images, and where each one belongs.

What this is about

Slang is not decoration — it is most of what you hear between friends, in WhatsApp groups, on YouTube and at every churrasco. The risk is never that you use a word nobody knows; it is that you use the right word in the wrong room. So this chapter gives you three things: a safe core that works almost anywhere in Brazil, the image behind each idiom (which is what makes it stick), and a register map so you always know which suit you are wearing.

The safe core — heard from Manaus to Porto Alegre

Fala, mano, firmeza? — Firmeza! Bora naquele rolê? greeting + invitation
Se liga: a festa foi da hora, tá ligado? se liga = heads up · tá ligado? = you know?
Ontem deu ruim, mas hoje deu bom.dar + adjective, never agreeing
Relaxa, tô zoando — eu também paguei mico. zoar = to tease · pagar mico = to embarrass yourself
Que treta no grupo — ficou um climão.treta = a row · climão = the awkward silence
The two workhorses both come from ligar (to connect): tá ligado? checks that the listener is still plugged in, se liga plugs them back in. And to be blunt without being rude, announce it: papo reto.

The idiom engine — bodies, animals, food

Learn the literal image first. It is the hook that makes the meaning stay.

Para de encher o saco! lit. fill the bag → to annoy
Você quebra o meu galho essa vez? lit. break the branch → do me a favour
Ele pisou na bola e depois teve que engolir sapo.stepped on the ball (let people down) · swallow a frog (take it silently)
Ele tá viajando na maionese — vamos colocar a mão na massa. talking nonsense · get down to work
Tira o cavalinho da chuva: ele chutou o balde.forget it · he lost patience and walked out
False friend: chutar o balde looks like "kick the bucket" — but nobody dies. It is losing patience and abandoning the whole thing. And dar um perdido is not getting lost; it is leaving someone no vácuo, unanswered.

The intensity dial — say exactly how good or bad

Foi legal. / Foi bacana. mild — safe with anyone
Foi massa! / Foi da hora! strong — friends
Foi sensacional!maximum — works in any register
Foi chato. < Foi um saco. < Foi barra pesada. the negative dial, rising
Notch discipline: um saco is "a real pain" — fine with friends, borderline with a client. Barra pesada is heavier still: a rough neighbourhood, a brutal week. Reach for it and people assume you mean it.

Register safety — who, where, how old

Deu ruim aqui. → Houve um imprevisto. friends → chefia / e-mail
Ele pisou na bola. → Ele não cumpriu o combinado.friends → formal writing
Vamos colocar a mão na massa!✅ safe even with the boss
mano / meu (SP) · oxe / vixe (NE) · tri / bah (RS) regional badges — they place you on a map

Exceptions & details

1 · One notch per sentence. A festa foi muito massa demais top da hora is a parody. A festa foi massa! is a Brazilian.
2 · Never mix registers in one line. Prezado Senhor, deu ruim aqui is the clash that makes people laugh — it is exactly the joke Lição 36 warned you about.
3 · Watch the verb forms: engolir gives eu engulo, and the expression takes no article — eu engulo sapo.
4 · Gíria expires faster than anything else. A word from a 2010 funk hit lands the way "groovy" does in English. Rule of thumb: if you learned it from a song rather than a living person, park it.
5 · The middle register is where Brazil lives. Not Venho por meio desta, not tá ligado, mano, but the warm middle: Oi, tudo bem? Surgiu um imprevisto, mas fica tranquilo que eu resolvo. Swap um saco → chato, deu ruim → imprevisto, de boa → tranquilo and you can talk to a landlord, a doctor and a new colleague on the same afternoon.
