Gostaria, queria & poderia — the politeness ladder

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 28 of 60 · taught in Lição 18 · level A2. From quero to gostaria — asking for things the smooth Brazilian way, plus pedir and trazer.

What this is about

How to WANT things politely. Portuguese has a politeness ladder built from tenses you already know — and restaurants are where you'll climb it daily. The star: gostaria, the "I would like" that opens doors everywhere.

The politeness ladder

Eu quero um café. I want — direct (fine with friends)
Eu queria um café… I wanted → "I'd like" — the imperfeito softens it
Eu gostaria de um café. I would like — the polished top step
gostaria keeps the de: gostaria DE um suco, gostaria DE pedir. It's still gostar under the hood. In real restaurants, queria is the everyday winner; gostaria shines in emails and formal settings.

poderia — could you…?

Você poderia trazer a conta? could you bring the bill?
Poderia falar mais devagar? could you speak slower? — your best friend
(spoken shortcut: Pode trazer a conta?)pode = totally polite in Brazil too

The restaurant script

Com licença! · Por gentileza… getting attention, extra-polite flavor
— Pois não? waiter's "how can I help?" (looks negative, means YES!)
Para mim, o prato do dia. ordering for yourself at a table
O que você recomenda? · Posso provar?recommendations · tasting
A conta, por favor! the classic closer

Exceptions & details

1 · pois não vs pois não!: as a question = "yes, how can I help?"; as an answer = "of course!". It NEVER means no. História maluca, but true.
2 · queria is technically past ("I wanted") — context makes it polite present. Nobody will ever misread it.
3 · por gentileza = por favor in a suit. Great for service situations.
4 · The full conditional (-ria endings) becomes a whole tense in B1 (Lição 23) — you're previewing it.
