Regência verbal — gostar DE, confiar EM

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 55 of 60 · taught in Lição 35 · level B2. Which preposition each verb demands — the last big accuracy gap.

What this is about

Regência is the preposition a verb drags along with it. You already know gostar de and precisar de; the trouble starts when English pulls you somewhere else — "depend on", "complain about", "married to". Portuguese has its own map, and it is smaller than it looks: four families cover almost everything. The habit to build is simple — never learn a verb without its preposition.

The DE family — need, miss, quit, complain

Three different English prepositions — depend ON, complain ABOUT, take part IN — and one Portuguese answer: de.

The EM family — the inner life

The A / PARA family — and the verb that takes nothing

Eu liguei para o cliente três vezes. ligar para (to phone)
Eu avisei você ontem! ⚠ avisar takes a plain object — no preposition
Ela me ensinou a dizer não. ensinar alguém a

The COM family — relationships

Eu concordo com você totalmente. concordar com
Você pode contar com o meu apoio.contar com = to rely on
Ela casou com um colega do trabalho. Portuguese marries WITH — never de
Three buckets, eighty percent of the language: a relationship between two parties → com. Needing or losing something → de. Something happening inside your head → em.

Exceptions & details

1 · The pairs where the preposition IS the meaning. Conto com você (I rely on you) ≠ Conto para você (I tell you). Penso em você (I think about you) ≠ O que você pensa dele? (your opinion of him). Assisti ao jogo (watched) ≠ A enfermeira assistiu o paciente (assisted).
2 · The lembrar / esquecer rule in one line: no reflexive pronoun → no preposition (lembrei o nome, esqueci a chave); reflexive pronoun → de (me lembrei do nome, me esqueci da chave). Spoken Brazil overwhelmingly prefers the second.
3 · Brazil vs Portugal, decision one: say cheguei em São Paulo. Cheguei a casa sounds like reading an old textbook aloud.
4 · Brazil vs Portugal, decision two: books demand assistir ao filme; real speech says assisti o filme at every level of education. Speak the second, write the first.
5 · Diagnose your own slips: nearly every regência mistake is English leaking through. When you hesitate, ask what English would do — and then deliberately do something else.
