Opinions & glue words — concordo, que, onde

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 36 of 60 · taught in Lição 26 · level B1. Agree, disagree politely, and connect sentences like a native.

What this is about

Two skills that turn short answers into real conversation: giving and handling opinions the Brazilian way (agree warmly, disagree softly, structure an argument), and the glue words — que, quem, onde, o que — that let one sentence carry two ideas: the movie THAT I saw, the person WITH WHOM I spoke, the city WHERE I was born.

Agreeing & disagreeing — with the right prepositions

Concordo com você. · Concordo plenamente! concordar COM
Discordo de você. · Discordo totalmente. discordar DE
Você tem razão. · Você está enganado / enganada. you HAVE reason; enganado = mistaken (polite)
Não é bem assim… · Depende. · Eu vejo de outro jeito. the soft pushback kit
eu convenço, ele convence, convenci · eu defendo, defendiconvencer alguém A fazer · defender uma ideia

Structuring an argument — the skeleton words

Na minha opinião… · Para falar a verdade… · Em primeiro lugar…opening
Por um lado… por outro (lado)… · Além disso… · Pelo contrário… developing
Resumindo… · Que tal mudarmos de assunto? closing / peace-making

The glue words (relative pronouns)

O filme que eu vi. · A pessoa que ligou. que = that/which/who — the default, things AND people
A pessoa com quem falei. · O amigo para quem escrevi. preposition + person → quem
A cidade onde nasci. onde = where (places)
Tudo o que você disse. · O que importa é isso. o que = "what / everything that" (an idea, not a noun)
O assunto sobre o qual falamos. · O amigo cujo time perdeu.formal/written: o qual, cujo (whose)

Exceptions & details

1 · que never takes a preposition with people — a pessoa que eu falei is wrong; it's com quem. With things, spoken Brazil often drops the preposition (a casa que eu moro); written Portuguese keeps it (a casa em que / onde moro).
2 · quem alone = whoever: Quem concorda, levanta a mão.
3 · Diplomacy is grammar here: você está errado is rarely said to a face; não é bem assim, depende, é um ponto de vista do the job.
4 · Football and politics are where all this vocabulary gets used — Qual é o seu time? is a genuine debate opener.
