Futuro simples — morarei, farei

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 31 of 60 · taught in Lição 21 · level B1. The one-word future: promises, dreams, and written Portuguese.

What this is about

Portuguese has two futures. Since Lição 4 you've used the spoken one — vou viajar — and that covers about 90% of daily conversation. The futuro simples (viajarei) — a Brazilian grammar book calls it the futuro do presente — is the dressed-up future: newspapers, contracts, speeches, song lyrics, promises and solemn dreams. You need it to read Brazil and to write like an adult; you'll speak it mostly in fixed phrases such as será que…? and farei o meu melhor.

The formation — the whole infinitive + four endings

eu morarei · você/ele morará · nós moraremos · eles morarão -AR verbs
comerei · comerá · comeremos · comerão-ER verbs — identical endings
abrirei · abrirá · abriremos · abrirão-IR verbs — identical endings
serei · estarei · irei · terei · poderei the usual troublemakers are REGULAR here
Stress: always on the ending — mora-REI, mora-RÁ, mora-RÃO. Nothing is chopped off; you glue and go.

The three rebels — fazer, dizer, trazer

fazer → far-: farei, fará, faremos, farão NOT fazerei
dizer → dir-: direi, dirá, diremos, dirão NOT dizerei
trazer → trar-: trarei, trará, traremos, trarão NOT trazerei
All three end in -zer and all three drop the -ze-. The same three shrink in the conditional (faria, diria, traria) — learn them once, use them twice.

When to use which future

Vou viajar amanhã. spoken plan — everyday life
Viajarei pelo mundo. written / promise / dream
O presidente visitará o Brasil em maio.news style
Eu te amarei para sempre. a vow — vou te amar would sound like a schedule
Será que vai chover? · Será que ela gosta de mim? será que = I wonder if… (spoken constantly)

Exceptions & details

1 · The "probably" future. Brazilians use the futuro simples to guess about NOW: Serão umas três horas (it must be about three), Onde ela estará? (where can she be?).
2 · Formal service register. Será feito, senhora — "it will be done"; O senhor fará a gentileza de…? — hotel-desk politeness.
3 · Never after quando/se. "When I go" is quando eu for (future subjunctive, Lição 27) — never quando eu irei.
4 · Object pronouns in careful writing can split the verb (dir-lhe-ei) — you'll see it in old texts; nobody speaks it. Brazilians say vou dizer para ele.
