Imperfeito do subjuntivo — se eu fosse

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 34 of 60 · taught in Lição 24 · level B1. The if-form: every daydream and regret in the language.

What this is about

The imperfeito do subjuntivo — full name pretérito imperfeito do subjuntivo — — the "if-form" — is the tense of daydreams, regrets and gentle wishes: se eu fosse rico, se eu pudesse, queria que você viesse, como se fosse fácil. It always points at something unreal or unlikely. Learn it as a pair with the conditional (Lição 23): se eu tivesse tempo, eu viajaria — if-form in the "if" half, conditional in the "then" half.

The formation — recycled from the eles-past

falaram → fala- → se eu falasse, se ele falasse, se nós falássemos, se eles falassem -AR
comeram → come- → comesse, comêssemos, comessem-ER
abriram → abri- → abrisse, abríssemos, abrissem-IR
tiveram → tivesse · fizeram → fizesse · puderam → pudesse · souberam → soubesse irregular past → irregular if-form, same recipe
foram → fosse (ser AND ir) · estiveram → estivesse · vieram → viesse · quiseram → quisesse the big eight
The rule that never fails: eles-past, cut -ram, add -sse. Nós always takes an accent: falássemos, tivéssemos, fôssemos.

Where it appears

Se eu pudesse, eu viajaria hoje. the golden pair: se + if-form … conditional
Ele fala como se fosse o dono. como se — always the if-form
Eu queria que você viesse. · Era importante que eles aceitassem.past triggers (queria que, esperava que, era melhor que) → if-form
Quem me dera que eu tivesse mais tempo! longing
E se a gente mudasse para o Brasil? e se…? = what if…?

Exceptions & details

1 · Real vs unreal "if": Se eu posso, eu ajudo (real, open) · Se eu pudesse, eu ajudaria (unreal now) · Se eu puder, eu ajudo (real, future — Lição 27). Three "ifs", three tenses.
2 · Spoken result-half: Brazilians often say se eu pudesse, eu ajudava (imperfeito instead of conditional). Fine in speech.
3 · Present trigger → present subjunctive; past trigger → if-form: quero que venha / queria que viesse. The trigger's tense decides.
4 · Past-of-the-past: for "if I had known", combine with the participle: se eu tivesse sabido (Lição 31).
