Voz passiva & the se-pronoun

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 39 of 60 · taught in Lição 29 · level B1. foi feito, foi construída — and the street signs: Vende-se, Fala-se.

What this is about

Two ways Portuguese talks about things being done without saying who did them. The voz passiva — ser + participle: a ponte foi construída em 1970 — is the written, news and history register. The se-pronoun — Aluga-se, Vende-se, Fala-se inglês — is what you see on every Brazilian wall and shop window. The same little se gives you the learner's most useful question: Como se diz…?

The passive — ser + participle, and it agrees

O bolo é feito pela minha mãe. · Os bolos são feitos aqui. present · agent with por (pelo/pela)
A casa foi construída em 1970. · As cartas foram escritas ontem. past · participle agrees: -a / -os / -as
O pedido será entregue amanhã. · Está sendo preparado agora.future · "is being" = está sendo
feito · dito · escrito · aberto · entregue · pago · aceitorebel participles show up here too
é feito vs está feito: ser + participle = the action/process (it is made here); estar + participle = the finished state (it's done). Signs and menus use the state: Fechado · Feito à mão · Peixe grelhado.

The street-sign se

Aluga-se casa. · Alugam-se quartos. verb agrees with the thing (careful written form)
Vende-se. · Vendem-se livros usados. the most famous Brazilian sign
Fala-se português. · Precisa-se de garçom. · Diz-se que… impersonal "one / people / they"
No Brasil, janta-se tarde. · Aqui se vive bem.general statements about "people"

The question kit

Como se diz "cheese" em português? how do you say…?
Como se escreve? · Como se pronuncia? spelling · pronunciation
O que quer dizer "jeitinho"? what does … mean?

Exceptions & details

1 · Speech avoids the passive. Brazilians say Construíram a ponte em 1970 (they built…) or use the se-form. Save foi construída for writing.
2 · Real-world signs break the agreement rule — you'll see Vende-se casas everywhere. Understand it; write Vendem-se.
3 · por + o/a = pelo/pela for the agent: escrito pela Clarice, feito pelo meu pai.
4 · Two participles again: foi aceito, está pago, foi entregue take the short forms; tem aceitado, tem pagado take the long ones (see the lately-tense chapter).
