What this is about
Tenho trabalhado muito looks like English "I have worked" — and that resemblance is the trap. In Brazilian Portuguese ter + participle (the pretérito perfeito composto) means "I've been doing this repeatedly, lately, and it's still going on". A single finished event — "I have visited Rio once" — is the plain past: visitei o Rio. Master this and you stop sounding like a translation. The same lesson gives you the life-update toolkit: acabar de, deixar de, continuar + -ndo and the native "for two years" pattern with faz/há.
The formation — ter (present) + participle
| tenho · tem · temos · têm + falado / comido / dormido | -ar → -ado, -er/-ir → -ido |
| feito · dito · visto · vindo · escrito · aberto (+ posto, pago, ganho) | the rebel participles — memorise |
| Tenho feito exercício. · Ela tem visto muitos filmes. · Eles têm vindo sempre. | rebels in action |
The meaning — and the English trap
| Tenho dormido pouco. | lately, repeatedly, still true — "I've been sleeping little" |
| Dormi pouco ontem. | one event → simple past |
| Já visitei o Rio três vezes. | "I have visited" (experience) → simple past + já |
| Moro aqui há dois anos. · Faz dois anos que moro aqui. | "I have lived here for two years" → PRESENT + há/faz |
The life-update toolkit
| Acabei de chegar. | acabar de + infinitive = to have just… |
| Deixei de fumar. | deixar de + infinitive = to stop/quit doing |
| Continuo estudando. | continuar + gerund (Brazil) — not "continuar a" |
| Faz tempo que não te vejo! | long time no see |
Exceptions & details
1 · faz / há are frozen singular: faz dez anos, há dez anos — never fazem. Há dez anos alone = "ten years ago"; há dez anos que… = "for ten years".
2 · Two participles: some verbs use the long form with ter and a short form with estar/ser — tenho pagado / está pago, tenho ganhado / está ganho, tenho acendido / está aceso.
3 · ultimamente, nos últimos tempos, cada vez mais are the natural companions of tenho + participle. If one of them fits the sentence, the tense is right.
4 · Não vejo … desde: "I haven't seen him since March" is present tense in Portuguese: Não vejo ele desde março.
