GRAMMAR LIBRARY · CHAPTER 41 OF 60 · B2 · LIÇÃO 31

Third conditional — se eu tivesse sabido

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 41 of 60 · taught in Lição 31 · level B2. The dead past: regrets, should-haves and near-misses.

What this is about

Lição 24 gave you unreal-but-still-possible ("if I had time, I would travel"). The third conditional is for the dead past — things that can no longer change: Se eu tivesse sabido, eu teria esperado — "if I had known, I would have waited". It is the grammar of regret, hindsight and near-misses, and it comes with the regret modals deveria ter (should have) and poderia ter (could have). Nothing new to memorise: you combine the if-form and the conditional of ter with participles you already own.

The two halves

se eu tivesse sabido · se ela tivesse visto · se nós tivéssemos chegado · se eles tivessem lido IF-half: tivesse + participle
eu teria esperado · ela teria perdido tudo · nós teríamos ficado · eles teriam feito THEN-half: teria + participle
Se eu tivesse sabido, eu teria esperado. THE regret pair
Se eu tivesse lido o contrato, não teria assinado.same participles as always: lido, feito, visto, dito

The regret modals

Eu deveria ter perguntado. should have
Você poderia ter perdido tudo. could have
Ainda bem que você me avisou! · Foi por pouco! thank goodness · that was close
Me arrependo de ter assinado. · Percebi tarde demais.arrepender-se DE + ter + participle

Choosing your conditional — the two-question test

Se eu tiver tempo, eu vou.real & future → future subjunctive + present/future
Se eu tivesse tempo, eu iria.unreal now (could still change) → if-form + conditional
Se eu tivesse tido tempo, eu teria ido.over, cannot change → tivesse + part. … teria + part.

Exceptions & details

1 · Spoken Brazil: the then-half is very often tinha + participle: Se eu soubesse, tinha feito diferente. Understand it, write teria feito.
2 · Mixed conditionals are normal: Se eu tivesse estudado, hoje eu falaria melhor (past cause, present result).
3 · Other triggers take tivesse + participle too: como se nunca tivesse visto, quem me dera que eu não tivesse assinado, mesmo que eu tivesse sabido.
4 · Preview — tenha + participle: a present trigger about a past event uses the perfect subjunctive: Espero que você tenha entendido, É uma pena que ele não tenha vindo.
