What this is about
Three verbs that unlock everyday Brazil. Ficar is the Swiss-army knife of the language — location, becoming, staying. And saber vs conhecer split English "to know" into two: knowing facts vs knowing people and places. Get these three right and your Portuguese instantly sounds a level higher.
FICAR — one verb, three jobs
| 1 · to be located (fixed things) | Onde fica o banco? — Fica na esquina. |
| 2 · to become / get (+ adjective) | Ela ficou feliz com a notícia. |
| 3 · to stay | Ontem eu fiquei em casa. |
SABER vs CONHECER — two kinds of knowing
| saber — facts & skills | Eu sei a resposta. · Eu sei nadar. |
| conhecer — people & places | Eu conheço o Rio. · Você conhece minha irmã? |
Forms: sei, sabe, sabemos, sabem · conheço, conhece, conhecemos, conhecem.
In the past, they change meaning!
| Eu soube ontem. | I FOUND OUT yesterday (not "I knew") |
| Eu conheci ela na festa. | I MET her at the party (first time) |
Exceptions & details
1 · saber + infinitive = can (a learned skill): Sei dirigir — different from poder (permission/possibility).
2 · ficar for locations replaces ser/estar only for FIXED things (buildings, cities). People still take estar: Ela está na esquina.
3 · ficar + gerund = to keep doing: Fiquei esperando uma hora! (I kept waiting for an hour!)
