POR vs PARA — the great preposition duel

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 48 of 60 · taught in Lição 14 · level A2. Both can translate "for" — and they mean completely different things.

The core idea

PARA points FORWARD: destination, goal, recipient, deadline — where something is HEADING.
POR points BACKWARD or THROUGH: cause, exchange, route, duration — what is BEHIND or AROUND something.

One pair says it all: Fiz isso por você = I did it BECAUSE of you. Fiz isso para você = I made it FOR you to have. Same English "for" — opposite directions!

PARA — forward

destinationVou para casa. · O ônibus para o centro.
recipientEste presente é para você.
purpose (+ infinitive)Estudo para aprender. · para falar melhor
deadlineÉ para sexta-feira. (due Friday)
opinionPara mim, esse é o melhor. (in my view)
Spoken Brazil shortens it: para → pra, para o → pro. Vou pra casa is what you'll actually hear.

POR — through & because

cause / reasonObrigado por tudo! · por isso (that's why)
exchange / pricePaguei dez reais por isso.
through / alongAndamos pela praia. · Entra por aqui.
durationMorei lá por dois anos.
per / frequencyuma vez por semana · cem km por hora
on behalf ofEla assinou por mim. (signed for/instead of me)
Contractions are mandatory: por + o = pelo, por + a = pela: Obrigado pela ajuda! Passei pelo mercado.

The classic traps

✅ Obrigado pela ajudathanks FOR the help = cause → por (never "para a ajuda")
✅ Este café é para a Anait's headed to Ana = recipient → para
✅ Troquei meu carro por uma motoexchange → por
✅ Saio para o trabalho às oito · trabalho pela manhãdestination → para · during the morning → pela
