What this is about
The verbs of daily life — waking, eating, commuting — plus the frequency words that say how OFTEN. This is the vocabulary of "tell me about your day", one of the first real conversations you'll have.
The routine verbs
| acordar → Eu acordo às sete. | to wake up |
| tomar → tomo banho · tomo café | to take — showers AND drinks! |
| almoçar → Nós almoçamos ao meio-dia. | to have lunch (a verb of its own!) |
| jantar → Eles jantam tarde. | to have dinner |
| sair → Eu saio de casa às oito. | to leave — irregular eu: saio |
| chegar / voltar → chego cedo, volto às seis | arrive / return |
| dormir → Eu durmo oito horas. | to sleep — irregular eu: durmo! |
Reflexive routine — me levanto, se veste
Some routine verbs point back at yourself and carry a little pronoun BEFORE the verb: me (eu), se (você/ele/ela, vocês/eles), nos (nós):
| Eu me levanto cedo. | I get up |
| Como você se chama? | the most famous reflexive of all |
| Ele se veste rápido. · Nós nos deitamos tarde. | gets dressed · we go to bed |
Frequency — how often?
| sempre | always | todo dia | every day |
| geralmente | usually | às vezes | sometimes |
| nunca | never | uma vez por semana | once a week |
Where they go: short adverbs before or after the verb (Eu sempre acordo cedo · Eu acordo cedo sempre); todo dia and às vezes prefer the edges of the sentence: Às vezes eu trabalho em casa.
Exceptions & details
1 · tomar is the Swiss-army verb: tomar banho (shower), tomar café (drink coffee), tomar um ônibus (catch a bus).
2 · café da manhã = breakfast (lit. "morning coffee") — but "tomo café da manhã às 7" and "tomo café" (I drink coffee) are different claims!
3 · Habits use simple present, never the gerund: Eu acordo cedo todo dia — see the estar + gerund chapter for the contrast.
