Quanto custa, colors & demais

Brazilian Portuguese grammar, chapter 24 of 60 · taught in Lição 14 · level A2. Asking prices with custar, color agreement, and saying something is TOO expensive.

What this is about

Buying things without getting lost: prices (custar), paying (pagar), trying things on, colors that agree — and the two-letter words that make or break the deal (por, para, demais).

CUSTAR & money moves

Quanto custa? · Quanto custam os sapatos? singular custa · plural custam
Custou duzentos reais. past: custou / custaram
Paguei com cartão. · à vista by card · cash/up front
Tem desconto? any discount? — always worth asking in Brazil!

Trying on & deciding

Posso experimentar? can I try it on?
Qual é o seu tamanho? your size?
Fico com a azul! I'll take the blue one — ficar com = choose/keep
Caro demais! too expensive — demais AFTER the adjective

Colors — three rules

1 · -o/-a colors agree fullyo sapato preto · a camisa preta · os tênis brancos
2 · -e and consonant colors only pluralizeverde/verdes · azul/azuis
3 · noun-colors never changerosa, laranja: as camisetas rosa
Rule 3 exists because rosa (rose) and laranja (orange) ARE nouns borrowed as colors — they stay frozen.

Exceptions & details

1 · pagar POR: Paguei cem reais pela camisa — price is an exchange → por/pela (see "POR vs PARA").
2 · a calça is singular — one pair of pants: a calça jeans custa… (English "pants" logic doesn't apply).
3 · o tênis is singular too (one pair): quanto custa o tênis? Plural pairs: os tênis (same word).
4 · Past of pagar: paguei — the g→gu guard again.
