morar, trabalhar, ter, gostar de — a life in Portuguese · ~607 words · level A1

Ana lives in a small but very good house. (pequena = small — from Lição 3, a tiny preview!) The house is in the city. The house has a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms. The house has a small garden too. Ana really likes the house. She lives with the family: her son, her daughter, a dog and two cats! The house is small for six — well, for three people and three animals.

O filho estuda inglês no quarto dele.

In the living room there is a sofa, a table and four chairs. The sofa is old, but Ana likes the sofa a lot. The dog is always on the sofa. (em cima de = on top of) Under the table there is a blue rug. (embaixo de = under) On the table there is a glass, a fork, a knife and a spoon. The daughter studies at the living room table. The son studies English in his bedroom.

À noite, a geladeira canta: “bzzz, bzzz, bzzz”.

Ana's kitchen is small. The kitchen has a stove, a fridge and a cupboard. The fridge is old and very noisy. (barulhenta = noisy) At night, the fridge sings: “bzzz, bzzz, bzzz”. Ana cooks every day. (cozinhar = to cook) In the pan there is rice, beans and meat. Ana likes cooking, but she doesn't like washing the dishes. The dishes are always dirty, and the bin is always in the kitchen, near the door.

Aos sábados, Ana limpa a casa. Ela arruma a sala e o quarto dela. O filho lava a louça e a filha limpa a mesa.

On Saturdays, Ana cleans the house. (limpar = to clean) She tidies the living room and her bedroom. (arrumar = to tidy) The son washes the dishes and the daughter cleans the table. Now the living room is clean and the kitchen is clean too. But the son's bedroom is not clean. The son's bedroom is dirty! Ana says: “Your bedroom is very dirty!” The son says: “It's so-so, mum…” (mais ou menos = more or less) Ana doesn't like the answer.

Ana's cats are a problem. (o problema = the problem — masculine!) They are never at home. Where are the cats? Ana looks for the cats in the living room and in the bedroom. (procurar = to look for) She looks under the sofa, under the bed and in the bathroom. She looks in the garden, but the cats are not there. Ana doesn't have the answer. (a resposta = the answer)

Aqui! Agora!” Os gatos não estão em casa. O rato está. O cachorro está em cima do sofá. Ele não trabalha e ele não estuda. Ele tem uma vida boa!

But today there is a new problem in the kitchen. There is a mouse under the fridge! (o rato = the rat, the mouse) A small mouse, very fast and very shy. (tímido = shy — a word from Lição 1) Ana calls the cats: “Cats! Here! Now!” The cats are not at home. The mouse is. The dog is on the sofa. He doesn't work and he doesn't study. He has a good life! (a vida = the life)

Ana trabalha muito. Ela fala português e inglês no trabalho.

Ana works a lot. She speaks Portuguese and English at work. At work, Ana's desk is small and the chair is not good. The job is good, but she doesn't like the coffee at work. She always says: “The coffee at my house is good. The coffee at work, no!” The daughter studies, but she also works with her mother… I mean, with Ana!

O filho procura o cachorro no jardim.

At night, the family is at home. Ana cooks and the daughter sets the table: a glass, a fork, a knife, a spoon. The son looks for the dog in the garden. The neighbour has a little bird, and the little bird sings at the window. (canta = sings — an -ar verb) The dog doesn't like the little bird. The little bird doesn't like the dog. The family has dinner, talks and eats a little more. (janta = has dinner — an -ar verb) Ana washes the dishes — today she washes the dishes, but tomorrow, no! She switches off the kitchen light and switches off the living room light. (apagar = to switch off)

And the cats? Now, now they are at home! The two cats are on the sofa, with the dog. They are clean, calm and very, very relaxed. And the mouse? The mouse is not in the kitchen. Ana doesn't have the answer, and that's fine. Ana has a house, a family, a job and lots of good coffee. She always says: “I like my life!” And you? Do you like your life? A little? So-so? A lot?
