Agora Bia levanta, devagar, e abre a janela. Ela arruma a cama rápido, porque a mãe dela sempre pergunta: “Você arrumou a cama hoje?”
It's half past six in the morning, and Bia is sleeping. Her alarm clock is ringing, but she doesn't want to get up. (tocando = ringing) She sleeps ten more minutes. Then ten more. At seven o'clock, the alarm clock rings again. Now Bia gets up, slowly, and opens the window. (a janela = the window) She makes the bed quickly, because her mother always asks: “Did you make the bed today?” (pergunta = asks) The bed doesn't turn out perfect, but it is made. (fica = turns out / stays)
No banheiro, Bia abre o chuveiro e espera a água quente. Ela pendura a toalha e sai do banheiro.
In the bathroom, Bia turns on the shower and waits for the hot water. (o banheiro = the bathroom; espera = waits) She showers with soap and sings a little. (canta = sings) Then she takes the clean towel from the cupboard. (pega = takes) The toothbrush and the toothpaste are on the sink. Bia brushes her teeth and looks in the mirror. (olha = looks) The mirror is dirty. — Today I'm going to clean that — she says, every day. (limpar = to clean) She hangs up the towel and leaves the bathroom.
Ela esquenta o leite numa panela, no fogão. — Eu vou lavar a louça à noite — ela fala. Bia raramente lava a louça de manhã. Ela joga o lixo fora e volta para o quarto.
In the kitchen, Bia opens the fridge. (a cozinha = the kitchen) The fridge is almost empty: one egg, a little milk and nothing else. (o ovo = the egg) She heats the milk up in a pan, on the stove. The coffee is brewing, and she eats a bread roll with butter. (a manteiga = butter) The sink is full of dirty dishes. — I'm going to do the dishes tonight — she says. Bia rarely does the dishes in the morning. She takes the rubbish out and goes back to the bedroom. (jogar fora = to throw out; o quarto = the bedroom)
No quarto, ela abre o armário e veste uma roupa simples.
In the bedroom, she opens the wardrobe and puts on simple clothes. (simples = simple) It's already ten past eight. Bia is late. She leaves the house and runs to the bus stop. (corre = runs) She is always in a hurry, and the twenty-past-eight bus doesn't wait for anybody. (ninguém = nobody) The bus is full, and the traffic is horrible. (horrível = horrible) Bia puts her headphones in and listens to music until downtown. (coloca = puts; escuta = listens to) Every day the same traffic, every week the same routine. (mesmo = same) She arrives at work at nine o'clock, almost late again.
At work, Bia is always doing many things. (coisas = things) Right now she is writing, talking on the phone and drinking coffee — all at once! She usually has lunch with her work friends. Today she is eating rice and beans, because it's her favorite. The plate is full, and the day is long. (o prato = the plate; longo = long)
À tarde, o telefone dela toca de novo. É a mãe. — Alô! O que você está fazendo? — a mãe dela quer saber. — Mãe, estou trabalhando! — Você está comendo bem? Está dormindo bem? — Sim, mãe! Estou vivendo muito bem! — E a louça? Você lavou a louça? Bia não fala nada. A mãe dela conhece bem o silêncio. — Hoje à noite, mãe. Hoje à noite eu lavo tudo.
In the afternoon, her phone rings again. It's her mother. — Hello! What are you doing? — her mother wants to know. (saber = to know) — Mom, I'm working! — Are you eating well? Are you sleeping well? — Yes, mom! I'm living very well! (vivendo = living) — And the dishes? Did you wash the dishes? Bia doesn't say anything. Her mother knows that silence well. (conhece = knows; o silêncio = the silence) — Tonight, mom. Tonight I'll wash everything.
At six, Bia leaves work and goes to the gym. She doesn't like it much, but she goes twice a week. On the way back, she stops at the market and leaves with a heavy shopping bag. (pesada = heavy) Afterwards she returns home slowly, making plans for dinner. (planos = plans) At home, she picks up the broom and sweeps the kitchen. Then she washes the dishes with an old sponge, and the sink is clean again. She still picks up a bucket of water and a cloth, and cleans the bathroom floor. (o chão = the floor)
Agora vem a pior parte do dia: a roupa suja.
Now comes the worst part of the day: the dirty laundry. The basket in the bathroom is full, and the washing machine is empty. Bia puts everything in the washing machine with a little washing powder and sits down on the sofa for a bit. (senta = sits) The machine is working, and Bia is resting — the two of them work as a team. (descansando = resting) Half an hour later, she hangs the wet clothes on the clothesline and the shirts on a hanger, near the window. Tomorrow she is going to fold everything — or the day after tomorrow. (dobrar = to fold) Bia rarely folds the clothes on the same day. The iron lives inside the cupboard and comes out of there once a month. (mora = lives — a joke: she almost never irons) The house is clean, the fridge is still empty, and Bia is very tired. (ainda = still)
At night, Bia has dinner, watches a movie and studies a little Portuguese. She brushes her teeth again and hangs up the towel again. Sometimes she sleeps early; usually she sleeps late. Now it's eleven o'clock. What is Bia doing? She is sleeping… finally! Tomorrow, at seven o'clock, the alarm clock is going to ring again. But that's fine — Bia likes her routine. A simple life, a good routine, a happy person.
