Todos comem no restaurante do João: arroz, feijão, carne e fruta.

João has a small restaurant in the city. The restaurant opens every day, in the morning and at night. João likes to open the door very early, with a coffee in his hand. The food is good and cheap… I mean, it's not expensive! (barata/cara — a preview from Lição 6) Everyone eats at João's restaurant: rice, beans, meat and fruit. In the kitchen, João has a very big pot. (a cozinha = the kitchen) He makes everything in that pot: the rice, the beans, the chicken. Bruno, João's son, washes the plates and the glasses. Bruno washes, and washes, and washes… and doesn't say much.

Todo mundo come com a mão! João não fala nada. Ele mistura o feijão na panela. Quando João não fala, Bruno lava.

At eleven o'clock, João takes the forks, the knives and the spoons to the tables. Every table has a white napkin. — A good table is a clean table — he says. (limpa = clean) Bruno doesn't like washing the napkins. — Dad, why do we have napkins? Everyone eats with their hands! João says nothing. He stirs the beans in the pot. When João says nothing, Bruno washes.

Hoje uma pessoa nova entra no restaurante do João. Ela escolhe uma mesa pequena e senta. — Boa tarde! — Quanto é a comida especial? — Não posso falar… é uma surpresa!

Today a new person comes into João's restaurant. She picks a small table and sits down. (senta = sits) — Good afternoon! What do you want to eat? — What do you have? — We have rice and beans, meat and a special dish! (especial = special) — How much is the special dish? — I can't say… it's a surprise! (a surpresa = the surprise)

A pessoa não quer uma surpresa. — Por que não? — Porque eu quero arroz com feijão! — Muito bem. E para beber? — Um suco, por favor. Eu não bebo cerveja quando como. — Suco de maçã ou suco de abacaxi? — De abacaxi, com gelo. Hoje faz muito calor.

The person doesn't want a surprise. — Why not? — Because I want rice and beans! — Very well. And to drink? — A juice, please. I don't drink beer when I eat. (quando = when) — Apple juice or pineapple juice? — Pineapple, with ice. It's very hot today.

In the kitchen, João cuts the onion, the tomato and the potato. He chops the garlic up small and makes a sauce for the chicken. He cuts everything very small, with a big knife. The salad has tomato, onion and egg, and a little salt. (o sal = salt) The cheese is from the market in town: it's fresh and very tasty. Bruno stirs the rice in the pot with a big spoon. — Bruno, do you wash the glasses? — I wash everything, Dad. I always do. João cuts one more onion and says nothing.

João serve o arroz, o feijão e a salada. — Bom apetite! — ele fala. — Tem pimenta? — pergunta a pessoa. A pessoa come tudo e quer mais. — Que delícia! Eu posso repetir?

João serves the rice, the beans and the salad. — Enjoy your meal! — he says. — Is there any chilli sauce? — the person asks. — On the table there's chilli, there's salt, there's a bit of everything — says João. The person eats everything and wants more. — How delicious! Can I have seconds? — Here everyone has seconds — says João. — Seconds cost nothing. (custa = costs) She eats more rice, more beans and more salad. The beans are a bit salty today, but she doesn't say a word.

— E a comida especial? O que é? — ela quer saber. — ele fala. — Doce e salgado, juntos. A pessoa não fala nada. Ela come um pouco. — Nossa! O frango com abacaxi é muito bom! — Você quer dividir o prato com o Bruno? — pergunta João. — Não! Eu não divido nada. Eu quero tudo!

— And the special dish? What is it? — she wants to know. (saber = to know) João takes a big plate to the table. — Chicken with pineapple! — he says. — Sweet and salty, together. (juntos = together) The person says nothing. She eats a little. — Wow! The chicken with pineapple is really good! — Do you want to share the plate with Bruno? — asks João. — No! I'm not sharing anything. I want it all!

Às sete da noite, Dona Rosa chega. Ela come no restaurante todos os dias. — João, hoje eu quero peixe. Peixe com batata, sem cebola. — Hoje não tem peixe, Dona Rosa. Hoje tem frango com abacaxi. — Frango com abacaxi? Que ideia é essa? Ela come tudo.

At seven in the evening, Dona Rosa arrives. She eats at the restaurant every day. — João, today I want fish. Fish with potato, no onion. — There's no fish today, Dona Rosa. Today there's chicken with pineapple. — Chicken with pineapple? What kind of idea is that? (a ideia = the idea) She eats it all. Then she has seconds. Then she has an ice cream. Then she has a coffee with three spoonfuls of sugar. — Tomorrow I want chicken with pineapple again — she says. (outra vez = again)

À noite, João não trabalha. Ele senta numa mesa com Bruno. Eles comem arroz, feijão, salada e muita fruta. Bruno lava o último copo e finalmente fala. — Pai, a comida especial é boa. Muito boa. — Quem faz comida boa, come comida boa! — João fala. — E amanhã? O que você faz amanhã? — Amanhã eu faço peixe com maçã. — Pai, não! — fala Bruno.

At night, João doesn't work. He sits at a table with Bruno. They eat rice, beans, salad and lots of fruit. Bruno washes the last glass and finally speaks. (último = last) — Dad, the special dish is good. Very good. — Whoever makes good food eats good food! — João says. — And tomorrow? What are you making tomorrow? — Tomorrow I'm making fish with apple. — Dad, no! — says Bruno. But João is already in the kitchen, knife in hand. We can eat there tomorrow — who wants to go?
