fui, tive, fiz — the irregular pasts tell a travel story · ~711 words · level A1

Last year, I took a trip to Rio de Janeiro. It was the best week of my life! A week before, I bought the return ticket online. On Friday night, I packed the suitcase and my sister's backpack. The suitcase got too full, and I took out three books and a pair of shoes. My father said: — Have a good trip, son! You're going to eat well and call your mother, right? I hardly slept at all the night before the flight.

On the day of the trip, I wanted to take a taxi at five in the morning. The taxi took twenty minutes, and I waited at the door with the suitcase in my hand. The driver talked about football the whole way. We went fast along the airport road: at five in the morning, the city is still asleep. But the airport was a problem: everything packed, people everywhere. I carried the suitcase and the backpack all the way to gate twenty-two. My flight got delayed an hour, and the time on the screen changed three times. (a tela = the screen) I ate an expensive sandwich and didn't talk to anybody.

Dentro do avião, eu peguei o assento do meio — claro. O avião subiu, e eu olhei a minha cidade pequena lá embaixo.

Inside the plane, I got the middle seat — of course. (do meio = in the middle) The plane went up, and I looked at my small city down below. (lá embaixo = down there) I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't: the plane came full of children. A little girl in the window seat talked non-stop the whole flight. She wanted to know everything about my country and about my backpack. The plane came down in Rio at nine in the morning. When I got off the plane, Rio's heat hit everybody straight away.

In Rio, I spent a week in a small hotel, on a beautiful street. At the reception desk, a young woman said: — Welcome! You are our hundredth guest, sir! The hotel lift took ten minutes and made a strange noise. I went up with two suitcases, a towel on my head and a smile. The room is small, but it has a balcony. From the balcony I looked at the hill, a piece of the sea and a dog in the street. (o morro = the hill) I put the passport and the money away in a small bag, under the bed. The hotel wasn't expensive — it was cheap and really nice.

E a praia… uau!

Every day I went to the beach in the morning, very early. And the beach… wow! I took an old towel and water in a plastic bottle. A man rented out a beach tent and two chairs for ten reais. Under the tent there was shade, and the shade was the best gift of the day. I drank coconut water and ate a hot cheese sandwich. At seven in the morning the beach is almost empty; at eleven, it's something else. A boy sold biscuits on the sand all day long, and I bought some three times.

Then, on Wednesday, I had a difficult day. I wanted to buy gifts for the family, but everything is very expensive in Rio! I went from store to store and didn't buy anything. I went up and down the same street four times, in a lot of heat. In a small shop, an older woman said: — Are you going to take a souvenir of Rio, young man? (moço = young man) Finally, I bought a small, cheap gift: a book about Brazil. (sobre = about) I also bought a guidebook of the city, with a map, photos and thirty restaurants. I put the souvenir away in my backpack very carefully.

On the last night, I made many Brazilian friends. (última = last) We ate, danced and talked until late. One person said: — You speak Portuguese very well! I said: — Thanks! I studied a lot, but it was easy… because it was fun! The trip had everything: beach, friends, a gorgeous city. It was hard to go back home.

Meus amigos brasileiros sempre falam: — Quando você vai voltar? E eu falo: — Em breve! Primeiro vou estudar mais português! A minha mochila ainda tem areia do Rio, e eu nunca tirei.

On the day I went back, the taxi didn't come and I almost missed the flight. I ran through the airport with the suitcase in one hand and the guidebook in the other. A young woman at the gate said: — Relax, the flight is late too. The plane back came empty, and I slept the whole way. Today, one year later, I talk about Rio with a lot of love. (o amor = love) The trip wasn't cheap, but it was the best thing I did. My Brazilian friends always say: — When are you going to come back? And I say: — Soon! First I'm going to study more Portuguese! (em breve = soon) My backpack still has sand from Rio in it, and I have never taken it out.
