There were three days left until Júlia's birthday. The whole gang was nervous, because the party was a surprise. — Let's hope she doesn't find out anything — said Pedro, hiding the balloons in the closet. — I doubt she suspects — answered Sofia. — She thinks we're just having dinner. Pedro was that type of anxious friend who checks everything three times. — Just between us, I haven't been sleeping properly since Monday — he confessed.

But there was a problem: Júlia was way too curious. — It's important that nobody posts anything on social media — warned Pedro. — And I need you to hide the cake at your house, Sofia. — Leave it to me. I hope it fits in my fridge! Pedro's biggest worry had a name: Bruna, Júlia's cousin. — Bruna is a good person, but she's indiscreet. Don't tell her anything — he insisted.

What nobody noticed was that Bruna was already genuinely hurt. She heard about the party from other people and felt an old jealousy of the friendship between Sofia and Júlia. — It isn't envy — she said to her mother. — It's that I love her too. — Of course it isn't envy, love. You're resentful, which is a different thing — her mother answered. — I just hope nobody thinks I'm the jealous type — Bruna added, already thinking nonsense.

Sofia ouviu tudo, tentou tranquilizar a prima e explicou a intenção do grupo.

On Wednesday, Bruna called Sofia and vented for forty minutes. Sofia listened to everything, tried to reassure her cousin and explained what the group had meant. — Nobody left you out on purpose. It was just the rush — she said. — I want you to arrive early on Saturday and help me with the cake, okay? Bruna accepted, and the conversation ended as a confidence between friends, not as a fight.

Talvez seja melhor amanhã… estou limpando a casa! — Convidados?

The funny thing is that on Thursday the one who slipped up was Sofia herself. Júlia called her: — Can I stop by your house today? Sofia looked at the giant cake in the kitchen and answered, with the calmest voice in the world: — Not today! Maybe tomorrow is better… I'm cleaning the house! Except that, two minutes later, she let the word “guests” slip. — Guests? — Júlia repeated, and the suspicion was born right there, in the middle of the sentence. It was a tiny slip-up, the size of a single word.

— Ela perdoa.

Sofia told Pedro about the slip-up, and the group's tension doubled in size. — Let's hope she doesn't put the pieces together — he said. — And it's better that nobody spreads this in the group chat. Somebody hinted that Bruna had spilled the beans, and an ugly falling-out very nearly started. — Stay out of it, Pedro. It was my fault — Sofia cut in, embarrassed. — I suspected your cousin, I admit it. I'll ask her to forgive me later. — She'll forgive you. But it's good for you to learn to wait before accusing people.

No sábado, quando Júlia abriu a porta, quarenta pessoas gritaram: — SURPRESA! — Estou exatamente onde eu queria estar.

On Saturday, when Júlia opened the door, forty people shouted: — SURPRISE! Júlia cried, laughed, and then confessed: — I've known everything since Monday, guys. — But I want you all to have this joy, so I faked being surprised the whole week. A tear escaped even from Pedro, who swore he was the least sensitive one in the group. — Today I envy nobody — said Bruna, hugging her cousin. — I'm exactly where I wanted to be.

A turma inteira gritou: — JÚLIA! — e a festa começou de verdade.

Pedro was picturing a soap-opera drama, but making peace takes a lot less time than fighting. Sofia and Bruna hugged in the middle of the kitchen, with their hands covered in brigadeiro. — Sorry about the weird mood on Wednesday — said Bruna. — Don't be sorry. It's good that we talk, even when it stings a little. Júlia heard it all from the doorway and didn't butt in, because some conversations need to happen on their own. She kept that moment with the same attachment with which she kept the old family photos. The whole gang shouted: — JÚLIA! — and the party truly began.
